Time:
12 p.m. EST – 1 p.m. EST
Duration:
1 hour
Description:
On March 4, the DOE, HPE, and AMD announced the El Capitan exascale system being hosted at Lawrence Livermore National Lab is expected to achieve more than 2 exaflops. This performance number will make it 10x faster than today’s fastest supercomputer and more powerful than the current Top 200 systems — combined!
What does it take to get to 2 double precision exaflops of performance?
Join our panel of experts to learn about the National Nuclear Security Administration’s requirements and how the Exascale Computing Project helped drive the hardware, software, and collaboration needed to achieve this milestone.

About El Capitan:
El Capitan will allow LLNL and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Tri-Labs to meet requirements for NNSA’s primary mission of ensuring the safety, security and reliability of the nation’s nuclear stockpile. El Capitan will make it possible for the labs to address the demanding requirements of NNSA’s Life Extension Programs, which address modernizing the aging nuclear stockpile in the absence of underground nuclear testing. El Capitan will allow LLNL scientists to run high-resolution 3D models quicker, as well as increase the fidelity and repeatability of calculations, thus making those simulations truer to life. Given El Capitan’s impressive capabilities in artificial intelligence, it will also give LLNL the opportunity to explore the use of AI and machine learning to support NNSA missions in the future.
